Computers are easy to use. They may seem daunting to many people, and there is much more to them than most people ever experience. But the basics of using them are simple to grasp. The ease with which people can learn these tasks means that individuals of all abilities can use a computer. But being able to use an internet browser doesn’t mean that you know how best to care for your computer. Most people rely on experts to know how to protect their computer from viruses, malware and other malicious files. If you worry about these threats, or think you might have one on your computer, read on to find out how to protect and clean your PC.

Protective Software

Installing software that will prevent these things from appearing on your computer can help. But they don’t always offer 100 percent protection. Even with a programme like Norton Antivirus or McAfee, your computer could still be at risk of certain threats. However, you should still make sure that you have robust protection. The easiest way to protect your computer is to install software that has a package combating viruses, spyware and more. You can buy software, or it is also possible to download free tools, such as AVG, which protects against viruses and malware.

Removing Malicious Files

You can be extremely careful with your internet security and still experience a virus, spyware or another malicious file on your computer. Obviously if you discover or suspect that you have one of these things on your computer, you want to remove it straight away. But how should you go about it? The way that you remove files will depend on what you have on your computer.

First, what not to do. You should never click on any links that pop-up, telling you that you have a virus, malware, etc. These are almost definitely malware themselves and will infect your computer. Unless, of course, they come from your antivirus software. But be careful that it isn’t malware in disguise, pretending to be your antivirus programme.

If you suspect your computer may have an infection, you can first try to remove it using a number of available tools. You may be able to use your existing protective software to scan your computer and remove any malicious files. However, if this doesn’t work, or you have no protection, you will need to find another piece of software. It’s not difficult to find a great tool to remove spyware or other files. But make sure you check that something is reputable before downloading.

While using a removal tool can be successful, you sometimes have no choice but to take more drastic measures. You should always make sure you backup everything on your computer. And you should keep hard copies of all your software, including your operating system. This means that if the worst comes to the worst, you can wipe your system and reinstall everything. But you can only do this if you diligently backup everything, so that when you reinstall you haven’t lost anything.
